Town and Country Housing - Home Straight

Categories

Housing Advice & Support

Description

Home Straight supports people to overcome hoarding and needs associated clutter. Commissioning, Availability & Eligibility: Our service is commissioned by local authorities and is available to residents of any tenure in that borough / district council area. We engage with people whose homes rate as 4 or above on the Clutter Image Rating Scale (CIRS). However, we do consider other associated risk factors, such as the mobility of the referred person, what the clutter consists of, and rooms or utilities that cannot be used in terms of eligibility. Personalized Support: We provide support that respects the referred person’s tolerances and needs. Trust and consent are the cornerstones of our engagement; our working assumptions are that it takes a lot of courage to allow someone into your home to sort through often prized possessions, or to acknowledge and lay bare what is often the source of so much shame. We work hard to build strong relationships with our customers so we can discuss possessions in the context of the impact it is having on their daily life. Underlying Causes: Beyond safety and improvements in utility, Home Straight is committed to helping bring about positive, long-lasting changes. Central to what we do is to support people to make decisions about the items they have retained and discuss situations and behaviours that lead to excessive acquisitions. We connect our customers with local resources to address the root causes of hoarding or clutter in their homes. We can also help the person introduce ‘healthy habits’ that support them to maintain their hard-fought successes to improve their home environment. Engagement and Assistance: Our involvement varies to meet diverse needs; from regular visits to help focus, motivate, and overcome barriers (guided self-declutter) to organizing declutters and deep cleaning services for those requiring and choosing this additional assistance. Cost of Services: Home Straight engagement is free. However, where decluttering or deep cleans are necessary, we will seek a contribution from charities, other agencies or individuals to protect the longevity of the service from which individuals, their communities and other agencies benefit.
